Antonin Artaud exhibited a keen, if ambiguous, interest in myths
throughout his work, alternately endowing them with positive and
negative qualities. In the 1930s, he presented Heliogabalus as a
"mythomaniac," that is, one who "sees existing myths" and "applies
them," freeing the pure forces they conceal.'
